The Spinal Cord Injury Project for Pakistan Earthquake Rehabilitation (SCIPPER) is the flagship initiative of the Hashoo Trust, dedicated to aiding victims of the devastating earthquake on October 8, 2005, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. This natural disaster claimed the lives of over 86,000 people and left a similar number injured, including many who suffered debilitating spinal cord injuries, rendering them paraplegic and unable to pursue their livelihoods and that of their families.
In response, the Hashoo Trust has provided comprehensive care to hundreds of these patients, many of whom have become permanently reliant on charitable organizations such as ours. Since the inception of SCIPPER, these Spinal Cord Injury Patients (SCIPs) have received sustained support, bolstered by the financial and technical assistance from the Pakistan expatriate medical community in the United States. For over two decades, these dedicated medical professionals have raised funds and delivered critical aid to the SCIPs.
The nature of paraplegia confines these individuals to their beds, severely limiting their capacity to generate income and necessitating continuous support for their basic needs. Hashoo Trust ensures the provision of food, medical expenses, and routine care, including treatment for bedsores and regular medical checkups, which involve substantial transportation and ancillary costs.
To address the daily livelihood and healthcare requirements of the SCIPs, the Hashoo Trust collaborates with numerous hospitals and medical centers in Islamabad and Peshawar, ensuring timely and efficient treatment. Our strategic focus moving forward is to enhance the welfare of these patients by providing high-quality, affordable healthcare and livelihood opportunities directly to their doorsteps, while also facilitating access to advanced medical facilities in major cities.
This ambitious vision relies on the ongoing charitable and humanitarian support from individuals and organizations dedicated to aiding these vulnerable patients. Through collective efforts, we aim to significantly improve the quality of life and healthcare outcomes for those affected by spinal cord injuries from the 2005 earthquake.
